Okay, so for all you inquiring minds who want to know about K's run-in with the law. (Ha! I hope I never say that seriously . . .)

Tuesday evening she and I are sitting on the couch and she says "I met a new friend today."

"You did?"

"Yeah, but he's grown-up friend, not a kid friend."

(red flag)

"Really? Where did you meet this grown-up friend?"

"At school. I got to go up to the office and talk to him all by myself."

(second red flag)

"What did you talk about?"

"Oh, things like my family and . . . where it's okay and not okay for people to touch you. Stuff like that."

(Millions of red flags flailing wildly)

(In my head) HE ASKED YOU WHAT??!???!

Let me just stop right here and ask--wouldn't any of you out there in blogland be absolutely furious that a conversation like this occurred without your permission between a stranger and your six year-old daughter??!?

I was.

Jeff was making dinner in the kitchen and his daddy-radar was on full alert; I couldn't tell if the steam I was seeing was coming from his ears or the veggies.

Without freaking out and jumping to conclusions, Jeff and I tried to ask her as many *casual-sounding* questions as we could to get as much information as possible. Now, K is a talker. And she's a bright little girl. But she's also just six, so it got to the point where "I dunno" and "I can't remember" were her main responses. She was clearly bored with our interest in her new friend.

But what we could gather from our conversation with her was that

  • she had been pulled out of class to speak with a man in the school office conference room
  • a few other little girls in her class also got to individually meet the "new friend"
  • no one else was present during their conversation
  • he recorded their conversation
  • he asked her about the members of her family
  • she played with play-dough (this was the highlight of the event for her)
  • he asked her to circle the parts of the body (on a generic silhouette) that were private and should not be touched
  • we were not notified in any way, shape or form by any adult that this happened

It was too late in the evening to contact anyone at the school, and we didn't know WHO she had spoken with; in fact she said specifically that he was NOT a police officer. We had no idea who to call to demand some answers from. So we had to wait until the next morning to talk to the school . . .

I would be very upset. This something that is so private and should be talked to with your parents. Not some strange person and with out you knowing. I would be so upset with the school. I can't wait to hear more.

I'm so glad you were on this. When Blaise was in the first grade an incident happened and Blaise was questioned, along with a few other kids, then they called me down to school, AFTER they had questioned the kids about what had happened, after they put things in their head, after they had talked with the kids for OVER an hour! ALL of us parents were furious!! It was a huge deal, and the teacher AND the principal were fired over it!!! You are being a good Mommy!

I would have been LIVID if this happened to me and screw being too late. I would have woken some one up to have them tell me what was up.

Let me tell you - someone would have been called at home if this happened to my child! I would have been at someones door!! Livid is not even a word to express how I would feel on that! I dont' know if my child would be allowed to attend school there anymore. (I'm SUPER neurotic)
