Sigh. I'm SO late this week posting this AND I feel like I'm cheating again because I'm recycling...but hopefully y'all will still put up with me. I cannot BELIEVE how busy things have been the last few weeks...and though I thought they were going to slow down by now....um, no luck. So here's another post from October of last year about my honey and what a sweetheart he is to me.
Music Memory #5
Song: "Memphis Soul Song"
Artist: Uncle Kracker
This song was released back in 2002 and I don't recall being in love with it then...it is probably familiar to most of you out there in blogland, but it was never a humongous hit. But it has recycled its way back into my life in a couple of different ways, both of which have to do with some of my favorite boys.
A couple of years ago Jeff heard this song on the radio and actually listened to the lyrics. I say this because he is generally not a listening-to-the-lyrics kind of guy. He prefers to like his music based on the beat, the voice and/or the overall sound. Which is why he claims to hate all things country. The stereotypical nasally twang of country music grates on his every last nerve, and so he is physically unable (or so he claims) to listen to country music. Don't hate; it's just who he is. I, myself, am a fan of most things boot-scootin' and badonkadonkin'.
Back to the song.
So Jeff's driving along one day with the radio playing, and even though he had heard this song many, many times before, for some reason, that day, he actually heard it. And he came home and told me all about it because, as he said, it was his song to me. Like it was him singing those words to me. That's how he felt. That I was his Memphis Soul Song who saved him from the dark, unholy night. Makes him sound pretty bad-boy, eh? Let me tell you, my Jeff's a big, tall guy who can be pretty intimidating to those who don't know him (he's 6 foot 6 and NOT a beanpole, ifyaknowwhatImean), but he is just a big old softy pile of mushiness when it comes to me. I am really, really lucky in this respect, and I know I take it so much for granted. I'm gonna go give him a smooch right now.
Okay I'm back.
So fast forward another year or so and now I have a little Casanova on my hands, in the form of my oldest, adorably crazy son, M. The one who still confesses things to his Mama. Before the kids got their own little iPods, Jeff and I would let them use ours, especially on long car rides, or as incentive to clean their rooms or something. We discovered that whenever M got to use an iPod, he was listening to "Memphis Soul Song" over and over and OVER again. Like to the point that I was saying, enough! I don't want to listen to you singing that song again!! Because, are my kids capable of quietly humming or enjoying the music that only they can hear? NonoNO! They belt it out, baby! Even their quiet mode ain't quiet. Just today, K was in her room, and I, two rooms away, knew with 100% certainty that the Jonas Brothers were rockin' her little world at that very moment. Because that's just the way they roll, don'tcha know. Note to self: I need to catch her on video when she's listening to her iPod, because she is a full-body listener. It's hysterical. Adorable now, but great stuff for utter embarrassment later. There I go again, I've gotten off track.
Returning to M, the one-song listener. Only under duress or threat of punishment would he change the song. Turns out, he was twitterpated. And he just lo-o-oved to listen to that song and think of The Girl. Oh, he was Crushy McCrusherson for a little girl in another class. And she happened to live in our neighborhood. So whenever we'd see her, his little face would light up. And she, being the object of his affections, would either smile shyly and wave---or stick out her tongue and run away in disgust. It all really depended on whether or not she was mad at him that day. It literally changed from day to day and M was always always bewildered as to why it was one way or another. Crafty vixen.Oh, sweet M, believe me, this will not be the last time a sweet little thang will confuse you until you barely know which way is up. It is what it is, son.
Oh, the drama of second grade. So there you have it~
"Memphis Soul Song" = my man and my boy

The YouTube link didn't work for me...and bummer too since I've never heard the song. I liked the story that went with it though!
And just in case you don't go back and check my comments---yes, HCMM is for sure still in the picture. But, until we decide to become exclusive, I still go out on occassion, and just being part of my singles group throws me into the middle of all the silly drama!

Wow...
I have NEVER heard this. I love finding new stuff! Thanks!
aww, thats really sweet. its crazy when a songs lyrics are so meaningful almost like you are the one who wrote them. good feeling!!
backstory tomorrow. I just had to get that off my chest first.
Love that story. My little 6 year old son still thinks that girls are pretty much useless. Ahh, the glory days. By the way, I was bored at work and googled Jakob Dylan, then I started missing you.
Oh yeah, I read your baby name post and love what you have picked out for your baby girl. Olivia is lovely and I have always liked it, Pearl is sweet too. I am glad your girls will have strong but romantic sounding names, very feminine too. Wish more women would name their girls girl names, we are slowly fading into androgyny.
