MM: Questionable Lyrics and a WINNER!

Musical Monday

Saturday, K was helping me do some chores around the house and she requested that we listen to Taylor Swift while we tidied up the kitchen. K's favorite song on Taylor's album Fearless is "Love Story:"

As we bopped along, drying dishes and singing together, some of the lyrics caught my attention and got me thinking:

'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
and my daddy said stay away from Juliet . . .

Now, it's been awhile since I read The Scarlet Letter--that was tenth grade English. But I'm pretty sure the chick who had to wear a scarlet letter (a big fat A for Adulterer) did so because she was sleeping with a man--wasn't it her priest??--and she ended up with child.

I'm not trying to spread rumors or anything, but, is there an underlying story here, Taylor?

Later in the song, she sings (that Romeo is saying)

Marry me Juliet, you'll never have to be alone,
I love you and that's all I really know.
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress,
it's a love story, baby, just say yes

So you see, there are conflicting messages here: reference to some not-so-innocent activities, and then plans to marry in a white dress.

Maybe I'm too old-fashioned and not getting it? Probable.

Maybe Taylor, when she wrote this (she's what--seventeen now?) hadn't read / understood the whole scarlet letter reference? I'm betting on it . . .

Regardless, it's still a catchy song and K loves every bit, so we'll keep singing together while dishes are getting washed.

Now it's YOUR turn! What's moving YOU this week? Link up below and spread the comment love!

jori!! is that a pic of you up there???? i don't think remember ever seeing a pic of you before!

as for the scarlet letter thing, i'm sure it's just reference for her being "taboo" according to her father. however, i agree, it's a poor reference!

a great song though!

you are totally kicking my butt this week! i'm just now starting on my post!!!

Hi Jori, this is my first time here. My friend Thom has pointed out your great meme to me. I think you have a point there. That's a real contradiction in the song. But, it's still great to listen. Hope you have a wonderful week :)

I didn't know all those lyrics, so that's an interesting new facet to a song that, while very catchy and popular, has been played ad infinitum in my household. ;o)

I never thought much about the words... but I am guessing the whole scarlet letter thing is less about adultery (or cheating at her age) and more about being a forbidden woman. Much like the woman in the Hawthorne story.
Anyway! Too much thinking for a sunday night! I'll be back tomorrow morning with my MM post!

Its hard to trust any of the music these days....oh, maybe with the exception of the MO-TABS...I'm pretty sure they're still safe!

If your ever out here and you have the time...we'd LOVE to have you stop by!

Taylor is Eve's fav singer of all time. I am serenaded by her daily... Eve, not Taylor.

Great post!

I love that song. Sorry I did not play along this week. I was taking care of my Mom. Have a great rest of the week.

I have SO had those exact same thoughts listening to that song. Seriously...the exact same thoughts. Don't get the conflicting scarlet letter and white dress. And yes, she was given the scarlet letter because she was with child and nobody knew who the father was. But at the end of the book you find out it's the minister.

I wonder at lyrics sometimes. They can really be gibberish just because the words have the right sound. Plus, with a reference to a classic novel (along with the whole Romeo/Juliet thing) you sound brainy, right? Or at least to those who don't know better than to realize the reference is a bit off!

LOL! I was wondering about that Scarlet Letter thing myself. But I liked the song, so.... oh well! :)
